Middle School Eve

It is the night before the big day...the first day of 6th grade.

The first day of middle school.

Without much contemplation, Stephan picked out a golf shirt to wear.

And denim shorts.

He is listening to a Bruce Springsteen album on repeat on his stereo.

A new era is upon us! Stay tuned for 1st day pictures....

(And just before he got into bed, he said "I don't want to grow up too fast." Neither do I, Buddy.)

Door County

This week we had a WONDERFUL vacation in Door County with Gramps & Jude, Jessie & Sam, Nic, and our friends David, Naomi & Ari. We stayed in a house on 13 acres of land with 500 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline. We enjoyed bikes, kayaks, croquet, basketball (ask Casey who won "pig"), camp fires, and more. I can't remember a time when I needed a vacation so badly & one that truly disconnected me from computers & phones.
Above is the garage apartment where the Cobbs stayed. It housed a collection of 1960's Schwinn bikes.

our lovely house

We had such a cute room all set up with a toddler bed.
We arrived around 10:30 at night and fell asleep with the windows open
and the sound of the waves lulling us to sleep.
When we woke, I felt like I was in a fairy tale cottage.
The floors were big, old planks of painted wood & the rooms joined in a crooked & charming way.

A very cute farm stand that Casey, Stephan, Ari & Norah and I rode to on our bikes.

At the Sister Bay marina and playground....

Stephan loved the kayaks!

enjoying the deck by the lake

Stephan proclaimed "This is one of the best vacations! It's like a Harry Potter house!"
The beach house was full of all sorts of fun treasures.
Stephan & Ari enjoyed a scavenger hunt & created a mystery to pursue in the house.

Norah was thrilled with the big swing set!

Stephan & Ari on the pontoon boat we rented.

All the kids got to drive the boat with Gramps....

....even Norah!

Norah & Uncle Sam venturing off on Horseshoe Island

Norah loved the troll at Al Johnsons

The famous Al Johnson goats!

We had cool weather, but it was perfect for our trip.
I love the change in seasons & some of the trees were even beginning to turn colors.
Now that we are home, the air is crisp & we are using our fire place again.

turning two

just hours old

her first birthday

TWO!

Cousin Stella

Congratulations to Dan, Katie & Reese
on their new addition!
We welcomed a new cousin to our family...baby Stella.
We were lucky to visit her right when she got home.
She is the cutest little thing &
we can't wait for more time together.

sugar cake

Ever since Stephan's birthday, Norah has been waiting for her own special day. She was thrilled when the time came to celebrate turning two. All she wanted was pink balloons and cake. More recently she specified she wanted "sugar cake." (she was in luck) She loved hearing everyone sing "Happy Birthday" and played quietly all night. She had on a mix & match of new clothes and dress up costumes & combined parts from different toy sets so at one time I think she was literally wearing or using something from all that she received from her grandparents who came over for the birthday fun.

"sugar cake" $25
pink balloons $5
butterfly garland $3
pink flowers $9

This look when she heard us start to sing....

absolutely priceless

What a difference a year makes

This is now....
August 2009

...and this was then
August 2008

Is it just me or does Stephan look much older?!?
We went to his 11 year old check up yesterday.
He is just over 5'1 and nearly 90 pounds.
He had two shots & a blood draw
and didn't blink and eye.
Most importantly, he is very healthy!

Norah asked to do everything Stephan did.
I hope she has this enthusiasm at her 2 yr old appt!

5:45 a.m.

(this was taken last fall, but it is along one of my favorite routes...
)

the sun has been slower to rise
the orange ring over the horizon
tells me it's not quite morning
early risers begin to make their drive to work
it's a careful balance on the gravel as they pass
steam rises from the creek
at this exact spot
all that i see is wide open and green
i cherish these pockets of countryside
the crisp air teases me about the season
in my ears plays the perfect song
as i round the bend toward the house
i have finally mastered the ability to forget
the tasks that await me at home
and just run

Fun in the sun

We had an errand to run near our old stomping grounds and decided to go for a walk and play at the playground by the lake.

Later we filled the baby pool and took a dip.

Stephan and I headed to town just the two of us.
We stopped at a chocolate shop where Stephan likes to pick out special treats
and walked around the creek before the rain came.

favorite conversation

I overheard a funny little conversation the other day...
Norah: Daddy, you a man?
Daddy: Yes, Norah, I am a man
Norah: Daddy, Stephan is a boy.
Daddy: Yes, Stephan is a boy.
Norah: And I a girl.
Daddy: Yes, you are a girl.
Daddy: Norah, what is Mommy?
After a long pause...Norah: She is a Rebecca!
It must have stayed on her mind because then one day as we drove along in the car, out of nowhere, Norah shouted "Mommy! You a WOMAN!"

Catch up!

A couple of weekends ago we packed a picnic and enjoyed the afternoon at the zoo.

Norah loved feeding the goats with Stephan and laughed when they ate it out of her hand. She was especially fond of the black and white one in the background of the picture below and said he looks like a cow.

We had a fun ride on the train. If the line had not been so long, we would have gone again!

Sorry this picture is so blurry. I could not get a good picture in this building! The zoo has a special bird exhibit where they give you a stick with bird food on the end. The birds literally sit on the stick (or even your hand) and nibble it. Stephan fed quite a few feathered friends.

(This was written last weekend...)
The Little Man. Although he is not so little, that will always be his name. And Norah has caught on to the variations of his name that we use and started calling him Steve-o and Stever.
We have had a great time these past two weeks listening to Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows (the last book) on cd. We love the reader. We listen to it all the time in the car and snuggle up at night and continue listening. Last night we tried to catch fireflies in our yard and then turned out all the lights, cozzied up under a blanket and listened while Stephan wore his old pair of Quidditch goggles that he bought for a costume a few years ago. (For those of you who don't follow the story, Quidditch is a sport played by Harry Potter.) Stephan is such a sweetie.

Stephan is doing well on his wheat free diet. We are lucky that gluten free products and cookbooks are more prevalent now because we know anything labeled gluten free is wheat free for him. Grandma has been experimenting with different gluten free baking mixes every week to maintain her tradition of cooking with Stephan. She found some good options. We liked the Namaste chocolate chip cookies and Red River Barn brownies. Stephan and I also recently made Gluten Free Pantry brownies which are nice and chewy and tried two of the new Betty Crocker gluten free mixes. Both of those were yummy as well.

I have been enjoying runs with Norah. Well, to be honest, I enjoy spending that time with her, but I haven't gotten the hang of running with her. It hurts my arms. When I go on my own, I need to sneak out quickly because she will toddle behind and say "I go running too!" On Sunday I opted to take her for a long walk. This is my new trick when I feel sleepy because the walk refreshes me. We walked for about 3 and a half miles "to town" as she likes to chant along the way. We pointed at flowers and flags, crossed the creek five times, looked for fire trucks that were all put away, stopped and watched a train go by, and got ice tea (Mommy) and a special cookie treat (Norah). When we moved to our new community, I worried I would miss walking to the coffee shop or ice cream store. While it takes a little bit longer, I realized how easy for me it is to do that now. The main street and nearby trails were packed with people reading the eating outside with the Sunday paper, cyclists, and families. Norah chats away the whole time we walk and finds everything exciting. On one particularly narrow and shady block where the trees arched very low over the sidewalk, she opened her arms wide and yelled "Ooooooh" until we got to the other end. It's true that the world is more wondrous through the eyes of a child.
